Hampshire Premier Division: New Forest Hockey 10-1 Southampton II

NEW Forest Hockey Club’s ladies first team continued their top-of-the-table form with a dominant win against Southampton II on Saturday.

A quick-fire start resulted in a goal from Lia Waine after just four minutes. An excellent through ball from birthday girl Jade Lock left Waine one-on-one with the Southampton keeper, and the Forest skipper made no mistake.

Forest then won a penalty stroke which was despatched by Waine for a 2-0 advantage.

Nicky Brooks and Lock then joined the party, the former with a nice finish after a pull-back and the latter with a disguised effort on a penalty corner to give Forest a comfortable 4-0 cushion.

Forest’s success mostly came down the right, with quick balls forward from Molly Pates, Lynn Jones and Maz Brewis creating many opportunities. Goals followed for Waine, Brooks and Lock to give New Forest a 7-0 lead at half-time.

Forest were rarely fazed by Southampton, but the defence worked hard to keep the opposition at bay.

The second half was a different story with Southampton really testing keeper Becky Snook and her defensive line. Snook made several top saves to deny Southampton and good defensive play from Maz Brewis, Rachel Lloyd and Sarah Biddlecombe saw Forest through a patch of pressure.

Beth Cammegh and Dawn Messenger helped work the ball down the left channel and Forest were soon scoring again. Another penalty stroke for Waine and a neat finish from Cammegh brought nine on the scoreboard.

Yet another penalty stroke was awarded after a perfect through ball from Rachel Lloyd resulted in a foot on the line after Waine and Lock confused each other and the Southampton defence.

Lock dispatched the stroke to give Forest an even 10. Southampton kept plugging away and did get a deserved consolation goal in the last few minutes.

Player of the match was shared between Lia Waine and Molly Pates.

New Forest firsts' push for promotion continues this weekend away to Bournemouth.
