Northern Ballet’s Romeo & Juliet, Mayflower Theatre, Southampton
SHAKESPEARE’S timeless love story will be celebrated when Northern Ballet perform Romeo & Juliet at Southampton’s Mayflower Theatre.
Adapted by Christopher Gable and Massimo Moricone, Romeo & Juliet is one of Northern Ballet’s most beloved and critically acclaimed productions.
Every leap, every turn, every heartbeat breathes new life into Shakespeare’s masterpiece and invites audiences to rediscover the iconic love story like it’s the very first time.
Playing Romeo is Joseph Taylor, a premier dancer at Northern Ballet. He revealed: “We worked with Sir Gregory Doran, former director of the Royal Shakespeare Company to study and learn more from Shakespeare’s text.
“It was great to delve deeper into an understanding of the story and the complexities of relations between key characters.
Once we started to put scenes from the ballet together with choreography, it was nice to see some of the pages of the play coming to life and also to notice where certain movements of steps were inspired from.”
Joseph continued: “Audiences can expect to be taken on a rollercoaster of emotions. One of the most famous love stories of all time is, in fact, a tragedy and within a couple of hours Northern Ballet brings this turbulent story to life with passion, a sense of realism and beauty.”
With glorious dancers, eye-catching sets and Prokofiev’s timeless music, the show is described as ballet at its most dramatic, romantic and intense. The piece is set to recorded music and does not feature a live orchestra.
Northern Ballet’s Romeo & Juliet will be at Southampton Mayflower Theatre from 3rd to 5th October. Tickets are from £12. For more information and bookings visit www.mayflower.org.uk
